MURPHY'S AND REICH'S LAWS

Murphy's Law: Anything that CAN go wrong, WILL go wrong.
Let's talk about this. Most people take Murphy's Law too lightly. They see it as a sort of humorous expression about failure. But it's a lot more serious than that. So let's look at the physics behind Murphy's Law and then I'll introduce you to Reich's Law of Success.
Look carefully at the words that make up Murphy's Law. Anything that CAN go wrong, WILL go ...

UNCERTAINTY

Heisenberg. Uncertainty. Quantum physics. Particles.
Well, what's it mean?
When you get down to the smallest stuff, particles like electrons, it gets pretty hard to figure out where the darn things are. It's hard to figure out how fast they're going too.
Here's where it gets weird. The more you know about where an electron is, the less you know about it's momentum or velocity. And if you can figure out its velocity, you won't know where ...

INCREASE THE PULL OF YOUR BUSINESS

Do you know what gravity is?
It's probably not what you think. Most people think gravity is a pull caused by a big thing---like a planet. The earth is big and if something out there comes by too closely, the earth will pull it in, right?
Not really.
Gravity does not pull.
A massive object, that means big and dense and not just big, creates a dent in space/time. Imagine a trampoline. Now, put a bowling ball on ...

BIG NUMBERS CAN FOOL US
posted by Chris Reich under
Billions and billions. Carl Sagan used to say that a lot. He used that expression to make a point and it worked. But was his point valid?
The billions and billions Carl referred to were stars. Yes, there are indeed billions and billions of them. His argument went on to say that because there are so many stars, billions and billions, there must be planets, and therefore, life out there in great numbers.
That may be but ...

WHEN STARS DIE
posted by Chris Reich under
When a super massive star burns out, what's left collapses. There is so much 'stuff' to collapse that this huge amount of matter compresses into a black hole. It's called a black hole because the pull of gravity from the dead star will not allow even light to escape. This is cool stuff to think about.
But where's the business analogy?
Well, before a massive star dies, it first expands very rapidly. It expands a little too ...
